Stanage - Paradise to Goliaths
Members: Andy Lew, Andy Stratford, Rory Marsden
Prospectives: Ted Backhouse, Harry Collin, Christopher Pearce
All attendees met optimistically in the drizzle at 10am and made their way up to Stanage Plantation, were the next hour or so was spent taking shelter under the overhang of Millson's Minion asking the question, "is it dry yet?" whilst on and off showers teased them. Finally, the break in the rain and the conditions that had been promised rolled in, and the meet got properly underway.
Christopher didn't waste anytime, flying up Sand Crack HS 4b*, followed by Rory & Ted. Andy Lew started & ended on Paradise Arete VS 4c**, Andy S and Harry followed him up, but only after Ted had leant Andy L a belay device at the top.
Next, Rory took the lead on Paradise Wall HS 4b***, whilst Andy Stratford decided he would link the two routes; Millsom's Minion E1 5b & Billiard Buttress HVS 5a, but somehow found himself on Pot Black E2 5c instead. A top rope extraction ensued, but in hindsight wasn't needed as Andy managed to climb the routes clean. Meanwhile, Harry Collin kindly seconded Millsom's Minion for another pair of climbers who's second was having a bit of struggle on it. As all of that was going on, Christopher led Rory & Ted up Overhanging Wall HVS 5a**. Ted opting for the tarzan approach on second.
Before he left for the day, Andy Stratford jumped on Paradise Wall with Harry. Rory, Ted & Christopher headed over to Pegasus Wall where Rory led Pegasus Wall VS 4c*.
For the final route of the day, Christopher treated everyone to a gargantuan display on Goliath's Groove HVS 5a*** - knee jamming in his cargo shorts didn't seem to phase him in the slightest. This obviously inspired Rory, who had previously stated he had no intentions of climbing the route that day, as he made it look quite easy on second as well.

This meet is open to all members & associate members and also any prospectives that have their own rack/ropes, or have partnered up with somebody prior to the meet that is happy to lead for the day.
Against all odds, on what has been a bit of a gloomy grey week, it now looks like we're in for some ideal climbing conditions this weekend. Come squeeze in those last few trad routes of the season, and join us, at Stanage Plantation. The climbing will begin at the Paradise Wall area and we will make our way westward along the edge towards Goliath's Groove.
The meet starts at 10am in the Plantation carpark from where we'll make our way to the crag.
Any questions feel free to contact Andy Lew or Andy Stratford. Hope to see you all there!
Andy Lew
